Community Service<\/h4>

The Chatham Fire Department members take great pride in their accomplishments. The members of this Department have done many things through-out the years for the community and have developed many worthwhile programs.<\/p>

FIRE PROTECTION WEEK<\/h4>

BLOOD PRESSURE PROGRAM<\/h4>

Individual blood pressure checks are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Fire Station.
Blood Pressure checks are available for entire private or civic organization groups by contacting us to set up a time and place.<\/p>

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY CHECKS<\/h4>

These checks have been presented by the Chatham Fire Department, State Farm Insurance, Illinois SAFE KIDS Coalition, Chatham Police Department,\u00a0Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office<\/a>,\u00a0Village of Chatham<\/a>, and\u00a0Illinois Department of Public Health<\/a>. Safety seats are donated and available to replace those that were old, recalled, or had been involved in a crash. The Child Safety Technicians volunteer their time to educate families on the correct installation of a seat and how to properly secure their children in them. Contact the department Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm to set-up an appointment for a Child Passenger Safety Check.<\/p>

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY<\/h4>

Chatham Fire Department members participate annually in the “Murder Mystery” dinner theater. We typically have two EMT’s that are part of the cast for the weekend event. The money raised from this event is donated to the\u00a0Chatham Area Library District<\/a>.<\/p>

We also participate in the library\u2019s \u201cstory time\u201d program throughout the year where firefighters read select books to children at the library.<\/p>

We also provide fire prevention and education events to children at the library during the month of October.<\/p>

OPEN HOUSE<\/h4>

The Chatham Fire Department has an Open House, biennially, that is open to the community. It is designed to display department equipment and facilities. We also invite other agencies to participate so that may share their community programs as well. Past participants have included Illinois State Police,\u00a0Central Illinois Community Blood Center<\/a>, Chatham Police Department, and others. The next Open House is scheduled for October 3, 2020.<\/p>

TOURS<\/h4>

The Chatham Fire Department has an open door policy in regards to tours of our facility and equipment. We, as members of this department, provide tours continuously through-out the year. Tours are provided upon request. They are provided to the children attending local day care facilities, after school programs, scout troops, civic organizations, church groups, and the general public.<\/p>

CAREER DAYS<\/h4>

We work with the school district to provide the students at Chatham Elementary, Glenwood Elementary, Glenwood Middle School, and Ball Elementary with information regarding the type of skills our occupation demands and discuss the different types of equipment that a Firefighter or EMT will use while performing their duties. We discuss with the students the need for them to do well in their studies; because they will need them to perform the duties of a firefighter or any other occupation they choose later in their lives. We discuss with them the importance of having good Math, English, Writing, and Reading skills.<\/p>

FOOTBALL GAMES<\/h4>

The Chatham Fire Department provides Emergency Medical Services for all the Glenwood High School football home games. Additionally, we provide Emergency Medical Services at Glenwood Middle School home wrestling meets.<\/p>

DAY CARE PROGRAM<\/h4>

The Chatham Fire Department provides fire education classes to the local day care facilities in the Village of Chatham. We provide classes that are age group appropriate and tailored specifically to any day care facilities particular needs. We discuss a multitude of topics, such as: Stop, Drop, and Roll; E.D.I.T.H.; Smoke Detectors; Do’s and Don’ts – Matches & Lighters; Crawl Low Under Smoke; and many more. We also provide the facilities with information that can be incorporated into their own education programs and information that can be sent home for the whole family to discuss.<\/p>

RESIDENTIAL “KNOX BOX” PROGRAM<\/h4>

The Chatham Fire Department administers the residential “Knox Box” program for the Village of Chatham and the surrounding community, so that the Chatham Fire Department may provide them to individuals in the community who have severe medical difficulties.<\/p>

In previous years, the Chatham Jaycee’s and the\u00a0King\u2019s Daughters Organization<\/a>\u00a0have purchased “Knox Boxes” or provided funding for this program. The Chatham Community Fire Protection District is hoping that additional funds will come available to purchase more “Knox Boxes” in the future so that the program will be expanded. If you or your organization is interested in contributing to this program we ask that you contact us.<\/p>

The “Knox Box” stores a key to your residence that allows only the Fire Department to have access to the home in the event that you have a medical emergency and are unable to open the door for us to reach you and provide you with medical assistance. There is a waiting list for the program. However, if you are interested in the program we encourage you to contact us to place your name on the list.<\/p>

BUSINESS “KNOX BOX” PROGRAM<\/h4>

The Chatham Fire Department administers the business “Knox Box” program for the Village of Chatham and the surrounding community. As of this date, there is no ordinance for business to install and maintain a “Knox Box” at their business location.
